Susan McCalla: Proving that Women Can Achieve Top Executive Success

Despite statistics that show that companies with gender diversity outperform ones that lack this diversity, only a small percentage of women hold high positions in S&P 500 companies. Unfortunately, most women struggle to achieve high level positions in most organizations.

Susan McCalla is one of the few women that was able to achieve high level success and pave the way for other women despite enormous barriers. She credits her success to being raised with two brothers and a dad that was a football coach because they pushed her to work hard. She started from the bottom at American Eagle Outfitters and became president before leaving the company that initially had all male executives. She is the founder of P3 Executive Consulting and holds a high executive position with the Pittsburgh Steelers. This is an incredible accomplishment in a male dominated field.

Despite her success and the numerous initiatives and networks to promote women, the underlying root cause of the problem has yet to be solved. Men still dominate key leadership roles across the world. One idea to solve the problem is to create sponsorship opportunities for women. A decision making executive can guide women and put them in positions to excel to higher positions. So ultimately to solve this problem males in top executive positions have to change their ways.

Susan McCalla started her company P3 Executive consulting to help clients improve their companies and profits. She regularly speaks about issues to help women advance in business. She has spoken at the Women and Girl’s Foundation of Pittsburgh and at the Carnegie Mellon University Speaker Series for CEOs.

Susan was born in East Liverpool, Ohio and completed her bachelor ‘s degree in business and marketing from Mount Union College. She had her greatest success at American Eagle Inc and led the company to new heights before leaving in 2009.v
